The Women Of Star Trek: Yeoman Teresa Ross

by Laura Goodwin

Yeoman Teresa Ross: out of uniform (Venita Wolf)

We met Yeoman Ross in The Squire Of Gothos. She was on the bridge when Trelane came there for the same reason that everybody (but Trelane) was there: she had a job to do. As Kirk so pointedly explained to Trelane, the women aboard his vessel are "crucial operating personnel", not playthings.

At one point Trelane magically changed her uniform into a fancy gown, and required her to dance with him. Captain Kirk pretended to be jealous about this, in an effort to manipulate Trelane into dueling with him.

Kirk did not actually have any special lovey-dovey feelings for Ross. He wasn't actually acting jealous because she was his girlfriend. She was not in fact Kirk's girlfriend. She was not Spock's girlfriend. She didn't seem to be anybody's girlfriend, as a matter of fact. She was just a low-ranking Starfleet officer who had been trying to do her job when Trelane came along and kidnapped everyone on the bridge. For the record, the only reason she was wearing a fancy dress and dancing with Trelane is because he forced her to do it. If she'd had her druthers, she would have stayed in her uniform, and stayed on the job back on the ship.

She couldn't wait to get back into her uniform and back to work, once they had returned to the ship.

Ross: "May I take a moment to change?"

Kirk: "Oh, I think you might. Turn in your glass slippers, the ball is over!"

Ross: "Gladly, Captain!"
