We met her in Gamesters Of Triskelion. Ensign Haines is noteworthy because she took Chekov's place when he was unavailable, and therefore clearly was as capable as he may be assumed to be, at that particular job. But her real claim to fame is that she went beyond her assigned duty - she noticed something that even the brilliant Mr. Spock missed, and it was a turning point in the episode.
Nobody knew what to do at first when Kirk, Uhura, and Chekov vanished. There were no obvious clues as to their whereabouts, and even Spock seemed at a loss, until "Eagle-eye Haines" drew Spock's attention to an unusual energy fluctuation reading on a nearby hydrogen cloud. She pointed out that it consistently was showing an excess of predictable energy levels... which turned out to be exactly the clue Spock needed to know what next to do....which makes Haines the big hero of the hour.
Hey, hey, Haines! You GO GIRL!
